Removal of the King Gear.

Today marked the removal of the king or great cog gear from the mill. This gear will be transported to Louisville to Ben's shop, where it will be measured, and a new gear will be constructed to match the new shaft. Observing Ben and his team work as millwrights on this project is quite fascinating.

Back in 1817, the millwright was Uriah Glover, who built this mill with the finest tools available at the time, armed with knowledge and education that few possessed to construct a mill of this magnitude on this site. Now, in 2024, 207 years later, Ben Hassett and his team are among the few millwrights remaining who have the capability to repair and construct a water-powered grist mill from that era.
